This week’s poem is by Gil Scott Heron entitled “Winter in America”

Winter in America

From the Indians who welcomed the pilgrams
to the buffalo who once ruled the plains;
ike the vultures circling beneath the dark clouds
looking for the rain/looking for the rain.
From the cities that stagger on the coast lines
in a nation that just can’t take much more/
like the forest buried beneath the highways
never had a chance to grow/never had a chance
to grow.
It’s winter, winter in america
and all of the healers have been killed or forced
away.
It’s winter, winter in america
and ain’t nobody fighting ’cause nobody knows
what to save.
The con-stitution was a noble piece of paper;
with Free Society they struggled but they died in
vain/
and now Democracy is ragtime on the corner
hoping that it rains/hoping that it rains.
And I’ve seen the robins perched in barren
treetops
watching last ditch racists marching across the
floor
and like the peace signs that melted in our
dreams
never had a chance to grow/never had a
chance to grow.
It’s winter, winter in america
and all of the healers done been killed or put in
jail
it’s winter, winter in america
and ain’t nobody fighting ’cause nobody knows
what to save.

This week’s throwback is by one of my favorite Hip Hop artist. In my opinion no one can touch him lyrically or creatively his name is Mos Def!!

Throwback song is: Umi Say

Make sure you check out this link to hear the throwback song of the week. It is still a dope song to this day and it was released in 1999 on his “Black on Both Sides” Album!! It reminds you of what good Hip Hop is! and it shows that it needs to be resurrected but I’ll save that for another post.

Hey Y’all it’s that time of the week already POETRY MONDAY!!!

This weeks poem comes from the talented Nikki Givoanni and one of my favorite love poems “Resignation”

Resignation

I love you
because the Earth turns round the sun
because the North wind blows north
sometimes
because the Pope is Catholic
and most Rabbis Jewish
because winters flow into spring
and the air clears after a storm
because only my love for you
despite the charms of gravity
keeps me from falling off the Earth
into another dimension
I love you
because it is the natural order of things
I love you
like the habit I picked up in college
of sleeping through lectures
or saying I’m sorry
when I get stopped for speeding
because I drink a glass of water
in the morning
and chain-smoke cigarettes
all through the day
because I take my coffee Black
and my milk with chocolate
because you keep my feet warm
through my life a mess
I love you
because I don’t want it
any other way
I am helpless
in m love for you
It makes me so happy
to hear you call my name
I am amazed you can resist
locking me in an echo chamber
where your voice reverberates
through the four walls
sending me into spasmatic ecstasy
I love you
because it’s been so good
for so long
that if I didn’t love you
I’d have to be born again
and that is not a theological statement
I am pitiful in my love for you
The Dells tell me Love
is so simple
the thought though of you
sends indescribably delicious multitudinous
thrills throughout and through-in my body
I love you
because no two snowflakes are alike
and it is possible if you stand tippy-toe
to walk between the raindrops
I love you
because I am afraid of the dark
and can’t sleep in the light
because I rub my eyes
when I wake up in the morning
and find you there
because you with all your magic powers were
determined that
I should love you
because there was nothing for you but that
I would love you
I love you
because you made me
want to love you
more than I love my privacy
my freedom my commitments
and responsibilities
I love you `cause I changed my life
to love you
because you saw me one friday
afternoon and decided that I would
love you
I love you I love you I love you

Hope you all enjoy this poem as much as I do!!

Detox Artist of the week is non other than the queen of Neo- Soul Ms. Jill Scott!!!

Since Jilly from Philly hit the scene in 1999 with her sultry expressive words there has been no stopping her. Winning Grammy awards, Chart topping and platinum selling records, as well as a window into her world with her raw and real poetry book entitled “The Moments, the minutes, the hours” the book really showed her talent as true poet. Jill Scott has also blessed us with her presence on the small and big screen from an emotional performance on “Law and Order SVU”. To the heart wrenching Tyler Perry series of “Why Did I Get Married”. And my favorite “The No. 1 lady Detective” (I really hope it comes back – but I wont be holding my breath). Even with all that success I’m sure if you ask her what her proudest moment is she would say the birth of her son Jett Hamilton (he is so cute).

Jill with son JettMs. Scott has not had an album out    since 2007. In my opinion I think it has to do with her recent legal troubles with her long time label “Hidden Beach” (they need to stop holding her back) . Even with that Jill Scott has not left her fans hanging because in 2010 she went on tour with the sexy and vibrant Maxwell which got rave reviews. And is set to release her fourth studio album “The Light of The Sun” sometime this year (if it doesn’t get pushed back again). but until then I hope to see more of Jill Scott spreading her beautiful gift through songs ( she is actually nominated for a Grammy this year for her duet with the legendary Chuck Brown “Love”) or through film and maybe even another poetry book. But whatever her next move I know it will be GOLDEN!!

Here is a video to remind you of the power full, funky, talented artist of the week “Jill Scott”

Heart Beats

My heart beats

To a different rhythm now

That you have come into my life

It skips a beat every time I hear your name

When you are away thoughts of you fill my brain

When you hold me I feel no pain

My whole being has changed

And my heart will never

Beat the same
